Number plate recognition, used where it solves a real problem

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) can record who comes and goes, control a barrier, or both. The right set-up depends on the problem you’re solving, so that’s where I start.

A camera and a barrier don’t solve every parking problem

Monitoring-only ANPR records vehicles without stopping them. Barrier-controlled ANPR physically prevents entry. They solve different problems. Many sites also need overview CCTV, occupancy reporting or a clear process for visitors alongside ANPR. I work out which before proposing anything.

What’s included

  • Monitoring-only or barrier-controlled ANPR, depending on how much physical control your site needs
  • Checking plates against your own permit, staff or visitor list. You manage the list; the equipment checks against it
  • Integration with existing barriers, intercoms and access control, reusing what’s on site where possible
  • Overview CCTV alongside plate reads, for context when a plate alone doesn’t tell the full story
  • Occupancy reporting and space-availability signs where you need visibility of usage
  • Reports on unauthorised use, overstays or incidents such as fly-tipping, for you or a parking enforcement partner to act on

ANPR identifies and reports. Permit administration and parking enforcement stay with you or a specialist parking provider.

The process

Every ANPR project starts with a conversation about how your site operates and who’s affected, followed by a site survey. Nothing is assumed before then.
